This is precisely but most people do, but this is not easy. Making money online is not an easy job. You'll get quite a lot of help in terms of videos and ebooks regarding making money online. But you'll fail a lot many times before succeeding. So hard work and perseverance is what is needed in making money online.

Hey - I know that this thread is pretty damn old, but I still think that commenting in this will be beneficial for newcomers.

As you are trying to "break into" the online world; you should realize that there is a huge learning curve that you need to go through.

Working out what model to follow. CPA marketing, affiliate marketing etc... you get the picture.

Anyway - I reccomend that you choose a method that you are PASSIONATE about. Whether it's teaching people how to make money, how to loose weight etc. THEN; find a way to make money. Whether you promote affiliate products that help people reach their goal.

...I also reccomend that you find a MENTOR.

This sure will cut the learning curve.

See; you need to be coached by someone who has got the SAME results that you WANT. Find a mentor, and follow EXACTLY what they say to the T.

Yes, you'll probably need a website, but no one can give you precise advice until you decide what you want to do.
    Here's a list of possible choices: http://bizammo.com/150-types-of-freelance-jobs/
With a website, you'll be able to showcase your talents, testimonials, and rates. People will also be able to find you through search engines, where most online activity starts.

Start with your interest :) Maybe you could advise what you are good or comfortable with. It's possible to find an avenue to earn with your skills, no matter how amateur it might be. Cheers and all the best!
