What content do you want on the website ?

A simple blog style, use WordPress
A more complicated CMS, use Joomla
    An ecommerce site, maybe osCommerce

You need to define "beginner" in terms of computer knowledge.

I would start with a WordPress blog. Wordpress offers cms. It's easy to install, too.

If you have a webhost that uses cPanel then installing Wordpress is very easy Using Fantastico. It literally takes about 3 clicks to install Wordpress using Fantastico.

Also Wordpress has numerous plugins that will make it more useful for your needs.

I have a website course for anyone interested in building a website. I'm taking applications for 10 people to go through it for free. We'll be using WordPress to get you started and ecommerce is definitely possible.

CMS and ecommerce - Joomla and VirtueMart (a Joomla extension) then you have both in the one admin interface.

You might want to seriously consider just hiring someone. Making a full-blown ecommerce site on your first try is a hefty chore.

If you are just beginning to learn about developing an ecommerce site, it will be very important to first determine the type and extent of the site you want to create.

At the initial stages you'll need to determine ...

    - The type of products / services you will be selling

    - The number of products

    - Your likely customer base

Try to avoid doing a rush job because you may later discover that the web technology and platform you have started out with might turn out to be inappropriate for your medium to long term needs.

It would seem that you'll need to work alongside someone who already has sufficient experience in ecommerce development.

All the best with your project.

For a CMS, Wordpress is one of the best. There are enough themes out there for almost any purpose including blogs, news sites, information sites and image galleries.

If you want an ecommerce store, you can either learn how to create your own, hire a professional to do it or use one of a variety of ecommerce platforms. One we recommend is Magento.

I have a Wordpress blog, and recently added a page to hold my WP eCommerce Store. Problem is, I can't find any directions about what to do next? Do I need another plugin to upload inventory? I didn't think it would be THAT difficult. But from what I'm reading here, it sounds as if it might be.

Is there a "wizard" or such for adding inventory? Or am I just going to have to hire someone to build it from scratch? (I'm obviously not a programmer!)

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the response, PDX, but my question was HOW to use it? Does anyone know of a tutorial or step-by-step instructions to follow?
