    I have passion for website design but am confused on how to get there. I can make pretty good websites using wordpress, Thesis, and knowledge of php, css, and html.

    However, there are things that can't be done using this. CS5 or 4 seems to be a needed program and Illustrator I also heard.

    Can anyone clarify what these programs do for web designers, what exact programs I should get (there are multiple versions, it seems), and how much it costs (I am a high school student so I should be eligible for reduced cost).

    learn 'notepad' instead....

    It is easy to draw something up in Photoshop. But, you will still run into many, many problems that can only be fixed by coding alone.

    You can start by building your skills in Photoshop designing (read, watch ans practice a lot about it). I am also a designer and I use Photoshop. Can you please give me information about how to design wordpress sites ?

    All you need to be a web designer is Photoshop, Illustrator (optional, it's good for logos and graphics), and basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. With those and little PHP/JavaScript wizardry, you'll be creating custom sites in no time. As others have mentioned, be sure to check out w3schools, it's a very valuable coder's resource.
