Imo, if you can rank in top 5 for "internet marketing" or "search engine optimization" or "real estate" keyword then you are one of the SEO expert.

i can say only this - just keep learning and work with some SEO firm, once u optimized for niche keyword and get raking than your confidence will increase and day by day you your self feel that you know SEO. - just work on different category of site and you must have enough confidence to optimize any theme of site. once you get ranking as per your thinking and analysis. you will be SEO expert. there is not any fix time, but it is totally depends on how much you learn and how your research is done. all the best

All you can do is research about SEO, then apply all your knowledge, then if you succeed, you are an SEO expert.
Start by reading threads on this forum in SEO Section, surf through 100s of SEO blogs and make a habit of reading and notifying yourself of latest updates. Start contradicting people if you feel they have wrong information, and when they bash you with comments, you will learn better with those lessons. Its a matter of understanding of Google, Yahoo, MSN works. Whats better is not a question here I guess. Its all about how you go through each things, and take part by doing and learning rather then just reading SEO blogs...

I think that u can be an SEO expert when u are #1 on Google for a very high competitive word without using Adwords. So when u can do that consistently, u will be an SEO expert till then we are all learning.
My string is pretty long. I think becoming an "SEO Expert" is kind of like being an expert in the combustion properties of sulfur. I'd prefer to be very good at SEO, very good at other forms of marketing, pretty good at building websites, etc. In other words, if you are going to specialize to the point of being an expert, you will be sacrificing your time and energy away from being balanced. For me, the goal is to make cash. SEO is a part of that, but it's only 10% of the puzzle...maybe less. I'm not trying to start a specialization vs well rounded argument when it comes to web business theory. I'm just saying that "expert" is a BIG deal and it in itself doesn't guarantee you big bucks (if that's what you are looking for). Brandon
just be updated always on SEO and also your results must be superb. you should also be patient enough if you want to be an expert. research, research, research!
To become a expert you need to study like a expert. First gain theoritical knowledge on the subject (Read SEO Books, Blogs , Articles etc.) then make some sites and apply you knowledge, optimize and rank them , this will get you confidence .Once you done this few times practically you can start providing services and taking up small projects and then slowly scale up to big projects.
wheever you have succed in SEOed your site and you have enough confident that you also can do with other sites then all works, that's when you can called yourself "SEO Expert".
