    Hi,

    Now I'm #2 for a keyword on G, and I wanna be #1 :D
    The #1 site is:
    - aged. almost 10 years;
    - PR 7 with 800+ links shown in link: command
    - gained sitelinks for that keyword.

    My site is:
    - nearly 1 year;
    - PR2 with 8 links
    - has sitelinks with domain-names serp.

    The question is: Can I beat that competitor? and what to do?

    Yes you can, every website can be beaten.

    It won’t be easy but it’s possible to do.

    Good luck.

    Simple.

    Beat him in all aspects of the details you posted.

    -Age - Start from scratch, go and by an AGED domain in your niche to gain the age edge
    -If he is a PR7 then he is getting HIGH QUALITY Backlinks. You should only be getting PR7 and PR8 Backlinks. These links will cost you a ton. Check on some newspaper sites that sell textlinks directly and you may be able to get them cheaper than going through a broker.

    - what keyword you are aiming for then get relevant backlinks and deep link the url so your backlinks for Christmas shoes(example) should be on a highly optimized page like http://myshoesite.com/christmas-shoes.htmland deep link this shoe page on another shoe site like
    <a href="http://myshoesite.com/christmas-shoes.html">Christmas Shoes</a>

    SEO has become too costly - i think its crazy to start buying old domains -but it works for some people.

    A better way is to exchange links with the sites in number 3 , 4 and 5 and maybe it will help

    Dude, do you know how cheap you can pick up a old domain if you use freshdrop.net and filter the domains by age and you might be able to pick up a 9 year old domain for $10.

    If you are already # 2 with your new site and PR 2 against the 10 years old # 1 with PR 7, all you probably need are "some" links with the adequate anchors.

    You beating that site has nothing to do with PR. PR has almost nothing to do with how your URL ranks for a particular keyword phrase, at least at Google which is the only engine I worry about these days.

    Continue to build links from relevant sites (regardless of their PR) using the keyword phrases (and slight variations) you want to rank for in the link text.

    I believe, with right effort every site can be beaten. At the same time, you should know that the competitor is also trying to optimize their site. Most sites reach #1 after 60-70% optimization is done, whoever can get it closer to 100% wins the race.

    Before few years was a experiment about best serp. And the results say No.3 is TOP TOP TOP, most benefits receive websites which are on 3th place.

    First results receive more traffic but worst. The people always open first position but they continue with 2-3 , and may be it's the reason 2 and 3 to be better from one!

    So don't try to beat the BIG competitor ;-)

    It won't be an easy job. You knew from the start that they were going to be a tough competitor, however, it will be costly like people has said. I would say to try to appeal to your audience rather than self promotion because it is basically impossible to out rank by hand, but you should keep in mind that they can be building even stronger and stronger links day by day. Go viral and appeal to your audience. It is better for you and builds a better relationship with your audiences.

    While the advice you have been given sounds reasonable I would take a differant approach. Don't put all your energy ,time and money in trying to overtake no. 1 as he/she has a fairly sizable lead from what I can tell. Sure, continue to build high quality backlinks. Determine what other keywords you need to work on and build back links to them. Deep linking to sub pages can result in significant traffic and income. Don't shoot your entire wad on one keyword regardless of how badly you want to take over the no. 1 spot.

    This is a very good thread. I have an exact situation now. My site lists second. The first guy has two links displayed in search. And so mine lists as third result. And he is a PR 4 and about 6 years old domain. I just started mine about a month and a half back and I am trying all I can do to push mine to the top!

    When you say get some juicy back links... is it by just buying the links? Or is it better to do blogposts and get them?
