Man, looks like I have to work REALLY HARD on my website's promotion. I just searched some of my keywords and Google is returning around 40 million results for each. Damn ...

After I finish my web application and test it, I am gonna bring it online. After that, I am gonna start promoting my website right away. I think it will take months for my website to become popular if I do everything correctly.

Ignore the results. That just tells you how many pages contain the keyword. It says nothing about how many of those pages are actively optimizing for that term.

To get your website on top of Google result you need to have unique content and title tag. As your title tag is unique you can achieve top SE rank.

About link exchange: Please do understand the reciprocal linking is no longer has any value. If you do this excessively you can expect a possible google penalty. Try to get one way links from relevant sites without bothering the PR of the sites. If you try to get links from from high PR sites, they may not give it for a new website.

I don't think you can ignore that result. It's far better to concentrate on ranking for keywords with less competition. I'm not saying you shouldn't try, but it's best to focus on some different keywords with commercial value first. That is, if you want to make money on short term :)

I don't think you understood what I was saying. I told asharfivig to ignore the search results number because it only tells you how many pages containing that search term have been indexed. It gives no indication of how many of those pages are actively targeting it.

I think i do understand what you are saying and i partly agree with you. But don't you think that it is far better to concentrate on more unique keywords than on keywords that come up with millions of search results? That's why i say you can't ignore the search results. It does say something about the market you want to target.

Not necessarily. I look for keywords that have a lot of search traffic and are easy to convert. Not necessarily into sales (since not every site sells something); it could be new registrations, newsletter subscriptions, non-spammy blog comments, and so forth.

The amount of optimized competition will tell me how much work I have to put into getting a particular keyword to rank well.

    OdysseyMedia,

I am picking keywords according to my site's content. I will post what's my site is about when I am done.

I think Dan is right. The results you see on Google just show how many websites contain those keywords. This doesn't mean that over 30 million are competing.

You first need to understand that you can rank for a keyword on a brand new website.

It all depends on domain age, history, quality, score, ranking for which keywords, backlinked, PR, etc..

Not to mention, for the first 3-6 months, you'll be in a sandbox, sandbox meaning you cant rank for any keywords until your website is "legitimate" to google.

    Hello,

Since you are still working on the web site, its better to focus on on-page stuffs. Once its done properly thereafter you can build many quality links using SEO services (off-page services).

Quality links can be build only when on-page services are good enough.

    regards

That's true every website trying to be in good position but only with reciprocal link exchange don't give you any fruitful result as you want. You need search engine optimize for your website. By the way you want your page PR0 to PR6, Ok, but only google know if he do it for you. And for your kind information another think I would like to tell you. Heavy Traffic and High PR are not same thing. High PR page may be in bottom of search ranking. So you need traffic and good position in SERPs of Google. So just concentrate on good optimization.

first you need a good niche, then you have to post unique article that contain specific keyword. Try to submit your website to social bookmark. build good quality backlink. And the rest is just sit down and relax.

I think that's a good thing, to pick keywords form your site. What i'm trying to say in my last couple of posts is that you could focus on different keywords with the same meaning that are more easy to compete with. Keywords that give less search results than the millions you have seen.

I agree with Dan that it's not always the commercial value that counts. But if it's important to sell something, you should pay attention to the keywords you target. Some keywords have less competition but a fair amount of commercial value. I think (and that's my opinion) it's a good thing to focus on those keywords too and achieve a higher ranking sooner.

Good luck with your site! :) Let me know when your finished!

Sorry to say Rogi, but the listed stuff is out of date and only for spammers.

Dont listen to the amount of results google is bringing up for each keyword. Focus on the first two pages of SERPS. You also should be using some sort of software either from google or another source that shows you how competative each keyword is and how often they are searched each month. Seo is a fairly slow process to start with but if dne correctly can snowball positively!

    Good luck!

Unique content with at least 200 pages..
    Good seo
    Proper use of tags
And there are many more issues.. As of now you need to concentrate only on content..
