    I understand. :)

As I posted, a page may be placed into the supplemental index for a variety of reasons, but, a supplemental result is a supplemental result.

If you have a good page(s) that is supplemental, or a page(s) that were in the regular index prior to Big Daddy, a likely reason is the "quality" of links.

Are you collecting quotes to show the absolute silliness of Google's position that we all just sit on our hands and wait for others to link to every page in our web sites - because anything else would be "evil"? If so, then indeed - most excellent.

To me it does sound likely that there are two kinds. But this is the first I've heard of them as well.

No there is one fact and there is one false. I hate to say it but Matt is incorrect on this and he knows it. Believe me he does. The supplemental results are not as he says. As some have noted he almost makes them sound like something you might want to get into or at least they aren't that bad. A supplemental result can only rank for low competition phrases. It doesn't sound good to me.

I don't read Matt that way. My take is that it's being said that having a page in the SI isn't neccessarily a "bad" thing because good pages that end up there are ther because of links, not a quality issue, and you could get them out via your link profile.

Currently, in all the DC's except one, the SI is being used exactly as it always has. Google looking there only when they cannot fill a data set for a query in just the regular index.

In that single DC, that is not the case. They start looking in the SI when they cannot find enough "good matches" in the RI. An example of this might be a 3 word query. Instead of using 2 word matches from the RI the go to the SI and look for additional 3 word matches.

I won't disagree that having pages in the SI isn't a "good" thing, but, it's not neccessarily a "bad" thing either. At least not in the context of quality.

Totally agree. Getting good links can get you out of the supplemental index however that doesn't mean it is not necessarily a bad thing. I do a lot of long tail in fact every day that increase pretty good so that I get tons of traffic from Google for low competition phrases. Phrases that probably could be won with a supplemental page however as long as it is supplemental it stifles that pages growth in the search engine world. Yes links can fix that but assuming two pages are identical in ALL aspects except that one is supplemental and one is regular. The regular page will rank higher. Getting links can get you out but staying out is the best idea;)
