You mentioned you have friends who get like 200,000 visitors. Looking at what facebook has, I think your friends website will be a good place to advertise this site of yours. Considering that the visitors from your friends website will probably like to connect with other like minded people in gaming etc. Make sure to put an "email this page", or "invite a friend" option on your site. That will help in word of mouth marketing as well. Bye
you can join my site free it does work NO COST look at my signature....when you get to my site loook at my pr and alexa!!!! thx
to half-quote a famous marketer, i think maybe Al Ries... PR builds brands, advertising reinforces them you need good PR first off the bat, so maybe getting a lot of high profile reviews on famous blogs related to your niche will help, and if your idea is good, the PR can take off from there...as someone has mentioned, you could use something like reviewme to help you with this. advertising is an integral part of a marketing plan, but much more effective when you already have your brand out there in the public's minds, which is best done through PR (reviews and press coverage etc)
This is actually very good question. I suggest someone who has own blog (posting to digg) or who has some portal to try to contact owners of those websites and ask them how did they do advertising when they started, how they did advertise, etc.
First I would like to ask if there is any reason why you don’t want to show the link to your site, because this would be a good place to start advertising. If you have a good product or idea, an excellent amount of publicity will be free because many bloggers and other tech/web enthusiasts will write about your site for free. If you are determined to invest in publicity and you have friends with big sites I would suggest you ask then for a banner spot even thought their sites have nothing to do with yours, I don’t think that this matters much. Another good bet would be to hire a few bloggers to write about your site, this could be done ate very affordable prices and generally provides good results.
Very good. At first, they did use PPC and such, but these are all Web 2.0 sites. They had referral programs and it became the norm for kids to use such sites. For example, if you go to a school in USA, all the kids have a MySpace and peer pressure forces others. To start, if it is a social site, advertise on places where your targets go, MySpace, Xanga.com, and advertiser.freedomofads.com is good for your needs
This is more of a guess than anything else but I don’t think these sites do huge publicity campaigns. I think it’s all word of month and good quality together with innovative ideas.
Actually, I think its a massive PR campaign. Get some high-up people to say something about your site and boom - youve got a 30s spot on every news channel across the country, digg, techcrunch, and more.
Looks like everyone has their own little opinion about how to advertise to gain stunning results. Anyway, the site is currently underdevelopment and isn't available to users just yet. It is written to meet web 2.0 standards. Most people I know that used PPC failed at it. Maybe it had something to do with text ad vs image ad but their results sucked. They did receive plenty of visitors at first, however, as soon as they stopped advertising their site's traffic decreased dramatically. I have been thinking about it. I also thought about Yahoo, too.
TWO words - VIRAL MARKETING Let the idea take off itself. Just make sure you go to the press about this.
Yep. After the initial press buzz and members start signing up, the viralness (not a word, I know) of the site will take it from their. Nice point, rep added.
Just an opinion - start slowly with advertising in first two months. Lets your first visitors be beta testers. Don't spend much of your budget in beginning while site isn't fully tested.
MySpace advertised initally to over 4 million members of a newsletter that Tom and Chris used to work for (name escapes me). Bebo.com was started by the founders of birthdayalarm.com which had at the time 40 million users. facebook used a viral approach - harvard first, then people with friends at harvard wanted to connect to their friends so more schools were added, then those friends wanted to tell their friends....
Use articles, RSS feed submission, press releases, eBay promotions for your products and much much more. But start off somewhere, articles are the best IMO after Adwords
OK, so can anyone tell me the top 5 ways to advertise. This doesn't just have to be adsense. It can be anything from newsletters, like jnh said, to t-shirts.
