If its a brand new website, stick to free promotional methods first:

1. Submit to directories
2. Link to it from other websites
3. Ask for feedback of the site on related forums
4. Tell friends about it
5. Post it on your facebook/myspace/etc profile

try posting it in directories and get link exchanged. i think this can be effective.. if you wish, try this free directory

 

If your website have quality content then its ok , if not first of all buy some quality articles
Then exchange links
submit into directories
keep updating site regularly
There are thousands of ways to promote website but quality content and link exchange tops them all

 

Thanks for the advice , i have already undertaken directory submissions, article submissions, also the site has quality and unique content. do you guys believe creating a video and getting it promoted on the various video sites would help?

1st check design & content of website.Content can boost your website. Try to do some submission to get backlinks. some of the goodplaces to get backlinks initially are demoz.com, dir.yahoo.com, botw.org.
