I'm still new with VPS. And I don't know how to access the root server. What software should I use to access it? Is accessing the root server same with accessing WHM and Powerpanel Virtuozzo?
You have whm? go to http://www.yoursite.com/whm - It should redirect, you need to manually accept the certificate. Oh wait what kind of hosting do you have?
Hi Chopsuey, it's a Linux Server Hosting using Centos OS. I want to access the php ini and mysql ini and other apache files. Can I do that with your instruction above?
In order to access your server using ssh, you will have download ssh client named putty. You can download putty from following page. Download putty
Thanks iNoxHost. I am not familiar yet with Linux. Should I have knowledge on Linux commands first before using PUtty?
Yep, you should know atleast basic linux command to use it. If you are completely unaware what you are doing, it could damage your system and lead to loose your data...
Thanks inoxhost. Should I just stay with WHM and Power Panel in the meantime while learning linux command?
You can access the root of your server through WHM (http://yoursite.com:2086/) through or SSH. If you are not very familiar with SSH, I highly recommend sticking with WHM for a user friendly interface. You can modify your Apache configuration ,php.ini, httpd.conf, etc... directly from your WHM under Service Configuration section.
You may not be able to find the Service Configuration, because you are using a Virtual Private Server and the hosting service may not allow you to modify the server configurations. But if you can access your server through SSH using Putty, I believe you can then edit the server and Apache configuring. Simply login to your server via SSH and type the following to access the Apache configuration: - nano /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf Code (markup):
The best apache setting depends upon your server resources and child processes, traffic and many other directives. Best way to google it or hire someone and learn how to do it ...
My suggestion to you would be to get someone to manage the server for you. Either hire someone or get the company that supplied it to you to manage it for you. Personally they left you in a bad state since you are not familiar with Linux administration (which you need to know) in order to maintain it.
There are lots of them kicking around, companies and individuals. If you get stuck on something, feel free to shoot me a PM, and I'll see if I can help you out with some of your questions. Chris
