How to absorb a competitor website ?

From a SEO standpoint, what is the best way to absorb a competitor website ?

Let say I have catfooddish.com and I rank 5th in Google for "cat food" and I was offered to purchase a competitor which rank 3rd for "cat food"

What is the best way to gain from this purchase SEO wise ?

Would a 301 redirect on newly purchase domain to my current business domain be the best way to gain serp and seo strength ?

Keep them both, but just funnel any click traffic to your main site's sales pages etc.

Why give up a slot on the first page of google by doing a 301 redirect??? What you REALLY want is another 8 of thsoe suckers - then you'll own page 1!!!

You can have several domains ranking high for relevant keyword phrases, and ultimately divert the traffic to one site where the final sale is made. For example, I have several sites for Nikon Cameras, Minolta Cameras, Leica Cameras etc, but the e-commerce database is maintained only on one of the sites where the final sale is made.

I would absolutely keep them both - with slightly different content and linking each other (or linking from the new one to the old - better one).

its nice that you will have two niche website's with you....do try to promote both of them and also exchange a link between both of them right away right now.

then try to get more backlinks to the 5th position website as this would might not dance with google changing algo....

try to promote them by links and also through SEM....this will help you and also dont even try to dissolve any of the website's they both wll help you

but be careful if all those sites are on the same hosting and dns and linking them together can make things worse a 301 would be ok

Buil more backlinks... find out where your competitors are getting links and do more than what your competitor is doing in link building.

What implications do the same DNS and same hosting linking to each other have on PR and linking? We aren't talking about spamming here but a company portfolio page may link to all the other sites and those sites might link back in the copyright footer.

Just keep running both domains. If you would like to boost one of them - just build more backlinks.
Ranking for two of the first ten positions will increase your exposure a lot in some cases.

The competitor website I could purchase in an informationnal site, while my site is an e-commerce site with reall transactions.

What would be the best way to maintain both and divert some traffic to my e-commerce site ? Links are ok, but im afraid of google not liking the link scheme. Would a no follow attribute on links pointing to my ecommerce solve the problem ?

If you host the two sites on two different IPs you will be able to use DoFollow links for better SEO. Just and idea ;)

    Hi,

Multiple ips on my server. Same server but different ips would be ok ?

Also, I have ips with different c block.

    Nope

Different C class servers is what is needed.

Best bet is to leave both as they are and work on each individually. Add a shopping cart to your content based site.

Do not mix links between the two.....

If google finds you own both sites they may dump one......

It is already good to have 2 top rankings websites. I don't find any logic behind redirection. Enjoy both.

I am agree with you Sem-Advance. As per others view, keep both sites and you have advantage of others.
