I think it depends on what kind of list. A list that people opt-in to get something for free, compared to a list of people that actually purchased something are completely different. Nowadays everyone is giving something away for free and these free lists are everywhere. They are a lot less valuable than several years ago.

The Pro's build large lists because they tend to trade with one another. Lets say guru 1 has 8k, guru 2 has 12k and guru 3 has 10k on there lists, together they have 30k total people to send there products to. That is something they do in there inner circle to build there large lists quick.
