Google knows what companies are selling links for PR. These companies require that you add code to your website to dynamically generate the links that you are displaying. Buying a link from someone with a straight text link can't be indentified but using link buying system code could be identified. I hope this makes sense. Just so you know, no one knows for sure. This is just my opinion based on a little common sense.

If your link is under a sponsored link sidebar then that will give it away. Make sure you dont buy them on a site where it says sponsored by or anything like that

This is what you're really wanting to ask: Which algorithms do Google use to determine if a site is selling links? Well, Google would use various methods for detecting whether or not a site was producing outbound links for money. I know that if a website/page has too many outbound links then Google will drop the weight on those links, making them contribute less to the (linked) site's SEO.

I would have no idea how (exactly) they could detect paid submission directories etc..., but I'm pretty damn sure that they would be able to detect it :)

Never put Tags or Headings like

    "Friends"
    "Sponcers"
"Other resources" etc on top of Paid link
such tags are now rated as PAID links by Google.

so this is one of the way to find out the PAID links by Google

yes, this is a way to find that it is a paid link, but, don't think that the google algoritm is such simple as:

    if title=sponsored or title=friends or title=resources then link1=paidlink else link1=goodlink

They have a well developed algoritm, some of you can't understand such complex things, but it is not needed to be a paid link. If you put 3-4 links in a place, coming one next to another with only anchor text they will know for sure that it is in a place designed for links and it will give less value to that link. If it is inside the content then they give it more value.

Google compiles a list for sites that sell links overtly, i.e "Buy a link on this page for $1" but sites that are stupid enough to advertise thier services publically and just offer the service to members get away with it.

Paid links are generally identified when people have ads all over there sites such as blogsvertise ads, TLa ads, and etc. In the early days of link building you didn't have to worry about that type of stuff, but in today's age you have to worry about that stuff.

For example we won't accept any blogs that have disclosures the reason being for is because we had over 400 blogs in our inventory get penalized, but guess what pratically every single blog that got penalized had disclosures all over them. The ones that are still riding high and passing amazing link value are the ones that don't have disclosures.
