Start with : Link Building Directory Submissions Article Submissions Press Releases Forums Postings Blog Comments postings.. etc.. do these things slowly and steady.. you will find yourself comfortable.. Cheers
If you're looking to do some offline promotion start with word of mouth - tell friends and family about your site. Ask them to visit the site and pass on the link to their contacts. You can then have the usual - link in email footer, business cards, local advertising etc etc
Start with creative looking business cards and flyers. For flyers, you might want to consider places that are relevant to your niche. I'd recommend inquiring with brick and mortar store managers about putting the flyers at the check-out stations. Also, as much as I hate it, putting the flyers on cars. Word of mouth definitely helps, but I'd recommend some kind of material product to distribute in addition to word of mouth so people won't forget your site url. You can find places that print up creative promotional material as well for cheap and that would be incredibly effective.
Use also social bookmarking submission. Get the power of social bookmark to drive traffic to your site!
