How should I do this (link building & seo re: new site)?

    Hello,

Basically I've started a new site where people can send in their phone pictures and have them displayed on my site. I set it up as a sub-domain to start with as I had no idea if it would work.

I then purchased a domain to go with it, and this is where the problem is:

The subdomain is ranking quite well in Google (probably because it's a branch off an already established site). However, it's not ideal as I want to promote the new url as it's easier to remember and suits the site more.

The problem being - Google still isn't ranking a site I set up 6 months ago very well, despite it being technically superior IMO to my other older site. If I start promoting the new site rather than the subdomain, it'll take about a year to get anywhere worthwhile in Google!

At the moment I'm 301'ing the new url to the subdomain, but this means I can't submit it to directories like dmoz as they don't like that sort of thing.

So my question is - what would all you experts do?! :D

Could you not 301 the other way around. That is the exact reason for a 301...A permanent move.

The new site you have set up isn't identical to the old one on the subdomain is it? If it is, then the reason it isn't ranking very well could be down to a duplicate content issue.

Would that damage my rankings for any new pages in Google? ie would it spider it as regularly as the old site because of the 301?

The subdomain is quite new and no PR, so I guess the rankings come from it being part of the older site. If I just 301 the existing pages, will the new pages not receive the same benefits as the older/redirected ones?

Sorry for my confusing questions - never had to do anything this way round before lol!

The old one is www.mob453.com and new one is www.officialringtonechart.com

I was concerned about the possibility of it being considered duplicate content, but I've changed a fair bit of the pages which I hoped would overcome it. I was about to start a new topic on this area actually so might do that now as had a few other questions to ask! :)

I had the same problem not long ago with my site.

i brought a domain for my old sub-domain placed a 301 re-direct to new domain then waited for google to update to only find out i had been placed in the sandbox (since it was a brand new domain)

doh! That's what I was afraid of :( Are you still in it now? Would you say it was worth it or best off sticking with the subdomain?

    Thanks
