Im new to using SEO techniques and I have been looking up on them.. Would this be how I do it? If I wanted to rank 1st on google for the keywords 'lol mate' as an example.. Would I have to get several links on different websites which look like this: <a href="http://www.roflolz.com/">LOL Mate</a> - which link to the website address but use the keywords as the links? Or would I have to be using the keyowrds somewhere on the website (title, keywords..) and all that..
Both. Get those links (ideally from pages related to 'lol mate') and make sure your landing page is about 'lol mate' too, often meaning 'lol mate' appears on the page many times as well related phrases such as 'laughing', 'lol mates' and 'lol friends'.
althought minor don't forget to set your Alt tags on images (be sure to do it on the up and up though meaning your keywords should relate to the image in some way such as an image of a smiley. Cheers John
you should also use variations of the link text you are using, dont just get links with the keywords 'Lol Mate'. Varied link texts are always good.
As TOPS30 said , getting links from sites related is good too. Other thing you could do, that nobody said is putting the words "lol mate" on bold/italic on your site. This will help too...
Links that is use as keyword can help. But there's so many elements that you have to consider in order for you to rank in search engine.
There are a variety of basic elements that affect your ranking in search engines, including (but not limited to) backlinks (and their quality), fresh content, keyword density, age of the domain, structure of your page (and code) and a touch of good luck
Seems like most things were covered, all I can think of right now is not to over do it now with the keywords, for intsance dont add the same keyword in all alt tags, H tags, headings, titles, metas, Maybe a good time to ask what does everyone feel is the optimum instances of a specific keyword phrase on a page, in my company we dont exceed 12 in content and code ?
