How safe do you feel when you trade on the internet ?

Personally, I've the following fear that haunt me as soon as I launch Firefox:

    1. I'd open my paypal account and it would have been limited.

    2. I'd sell something to someone and he'd attempt a chargeback after reciept of the goods/service.

    3. I may get something sub-standard and still would not be able to raise a finger because the seller has lots of green reps.

    4. <Any other kind of scam>

    5. Privacy issues: guys knocking my door because I couldnt transfer the domain within 2 seconds of money transfer.

    7. My DP account might be banned (I just read the TOS, and I use a public computer, so it might just (*@)#(@ me)

I feel quite safe as long as I do due dilligence on my transactions, and remember that if the offer is too good to be true, then it is.

I do not feel safe trading on the Internet, and will only do credit card transactions with well known companies for eg Amazon.

I don't feel 100% safe on auction sites where anyone can sign up, rather prefer to deal with direct stores - there's more reassurance if anything goes wrong that way

Yeah exactly, thats the point, you might be dealing with someone who pretends to be an Australian, but in reality, he might be a scammer from xyz country (really dont want to offend people by naming one country).

It's not a matter of feeling safe but a matter of taking precautions...

yet being careful and all that is not an assurance that you won't get duped ever...

to be or not to be...you're still the target. . .

    be careful still.

and patience. . . being in a rush could sometimes get us into trouble.

affiliategirl, that was a very nice advise.

I think the patience can come only with experience, and when you've experienced the net trade for some time, a couple of scams must be a part of it, it makes you stay alert so that you dont fall into a trap cuz of your over confidence, isnt it

I don't feel safe, I am so cynical because of all the stories I have heard, every time a complete a transaction, get a product and don't have any complaints I feel a great sense of relief.

I guess when I am a bit older, scamsters would cause me blood pressure problems everytime I initiate a deal.

See its very true that nobody can say that he/she is fully safe on internet while trading. Although I dont have any experience but still I have read so many cases in so many of threads thats why its better to take precaution.... What they say...... PRECAUTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.... It fully applies here. :)

No problem for me in like 5 years of buying (and to a lesser extent, selling) all sort of stuff.

I have some simple rules that have proven to be effective:
    - I only input my credit card number in reputable websites. Reputable = has been online for more than two years, has a very good history and reputation, and is generally well-known.
    - For all other websites, I use PayPal (for amounts < $1500 - NEVER above that)
    - I always do a small background check for new websites, i.e. look around on various forums to see what people have to say about the websites
    - I avoid trading directly with people. When I do it, if the amount is <$100 I use PayPal, otherwise I prefer Western Union, a personal check, or another way of payment which do not allow an easy cancellation. I really don't like direct trading over the Internet. This may be because I know how easy it is to do blackhat stuff (I'm not a blackhat but I worked for a computer security company and I've seen crazy things)

I also make sure that the person I deal with understand that it's his/her best interest not to f*ck with me.
Not that I'm a big black hat, but I can be annoying enough to cause more damage than the amount of the sale.
Once the person understood that, it's usually OK as I make it cheaper to complete the sale than to try to scam me.

And... I am paranoid. I have crazy passwords, double check the URLs after entering my passwords, and I go change my passwords if I have any doubt. For example, a few days ago, a website directed me to PayPal. I entered my credentials, and... I realized that I did not check the URL :O
So I ran to the PayPal website (entering the URL myself) and changed the password. Just to be safe.
