If I choose to use one of the proxy registration services do big guys like Google, Microsoft, Verisign and the like still get to see the real registration data or it can only be obtained from the proxy services when required by law (court order)?

Please don't rely on this as your sole source of information.

My understanding is that no one can view it without a court order or request from a law enforcement agency.

Only the registrar of your domain has access to those details.

It will only be disclosed with WIPO/UDRP, legal/governmental authorized requests or a Court Order.

Of course, google is known to use other methods to link associated domains - including whois history, ip range, link patterns, adsense publisher id, analytics, etc.

Aside from what Colbyt and Mjewel said, read your user agreement if you are
    utilizing that provider's privacy service.

Actually... Google has full access to your registrar details with or without proxy services.

A careful review of the ICANN regulations and terms clearly states that open access is made available to all registrars in their whois looksups. It is only in the PUBLIC lookups that the data is proxied with the intent of protecting your identity. As an ICANN accredited registrar, you have full access in the WHOIS database query share to look up any domains ownership.

So indeed, there is no court order required, they already have access to it.

The privacy thing was a great product registrars came up with the make more money.

    Hope this helps :)

For the average internet user it's pretty private. However there are "ways" to finding out who really owns any domain.
