How pagerank matters

I keep seeing discussions on does PR matter or not. People generally split into 2 camps, the naysayers of PR and the PR junkies. Why does it have to be that cut and dry? Here's my experience...

This question of does PR matter is really the wrong one, but HOW does it matter? I think people aren't looking at PR in the right way. Yes, it does matter, but not in the simple way most people think of it.

The unfortunate thing about PR is that it doesn't show the relevance of PR for each page. The PR value shown on the little green bar is simply an accumulation of PR from incoming links - REGARDLESS of relevance. So, PR can matter a lot, or not at all, depending on the source of that PR.

PR DOES matter when you get high PR links from relevant sites that also received the majority of their PR from relevant sites.

PR does NOT matter when you get high PR links from irrelevant sites.

PR matters LESS if you get your high PR links from relevant sites that got their PR from irrelevant sites.

An accurate pagerank would be one that shows you:
    PR2 for subject A
    PR6 for subject B
    PR0 for subject C

Unfortunately we don't have that. So that's when your homework comes in ;)
