In order to make a blog SEO friendly you have to include certain information in the blog that Google will recognize (e.g. keywords, titles, XML sitemap, etc.) and create content that increases the visitor's time on the site and the likelihood that authority sites will link to your blog. I made a list of the plugins that I use over here:

22 Best Must Have WordPress Plugins

For example, the Top Posts, Ratings, and Related Posts increase visitor time on the website which Google captures in a variety of ways.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Make sure that you have the appropriate keyword for your blog and then syndicate your content through blog commenting or by joining the forums.

    Hi,

I have experimented with lots of SEO plugins and none of them really work for me. I was recommended the yoast plugin, but again, do we really need them, and are they worth it.

If you build your theme correctly, you actually require no need for an SEO plugin. The big issues you have to look out for is duplicate content (so be careful how you arrange your archives, authors, posts), Header Tags and Meta Data (Title, Description). All these can be fixed if you know how to build your theme correctly. No need for any plugins. Plus it's really good practice to get into the right habit of doing things the right way (after all, all the plugins do is do the code that you can do yourself anyway).

There is an excellent article here "WordPress SEO – The Ultimate Guide to WordPress Theme Search Engine Optimization" that shows you how to do your themes without the need for a plugin. It's a great starter point for doing the stuff yourself.

A good way to test the SEO on your site is to install a search engine locally on your machine. This way you can emulate how a search engine spider will crawl your site (trust me when I say that those SEO plugins do not work!), you can even enter search phrases to test the relevancy of your setup (ie, is what you expect to come 1st for that search phrase the content that appears?). A good free "Sphider Open Source Search Engine" is all you need, well apart from An open source PHP/Apache Server environment "XAMPP"

I hope this has been of assistance to you. Any questions, feel free to ask. :)

My apologies, obviously being my first post I am not allowed to post live links, but feel free to do google search for the phrases within the "" to get to the required page. :)

I agree. Optimising can only do so much.

You can throw great links at a site, update it daily, but if the content is poor then you're going to get a high bounce rate. And if you have a high bounce rate then your links stand for nothing as the users have deemed your site irrelevant to the keywords they searched for. Your positions will drop, even if you have everything else perfect. How do I know this? I have seen it happen.

I had a client who came to me, but he ended up going somewhere "cheaper". They threw lots of links at his site. They optimised his site. And I will be honest, they did a good job as well. However they completely misunderstood the whole concept of a website. It's for the customers, your end users, not the search engines. It's SEO 101 and so many "SEO professionals" completely fail this.

Here is hypothetical scene. Your a company, you sell widgets. You approach an SEO company. They provide quality, relevant links from a wide range of sources. And they do so at a steady pace so you don't get caught out (that is another lesson, best saved for another day! :) They optomise your website content for the keyword "widget". They do a good job, and one day you end up page 1, position 1. However, there is a caveat here. And it catches so many companies out. If their is search volume for widgets (ie, people actually type that in). Then being first place you will get the majority of that traffic. However, if your content is written for a search engine instead of a user, you are going to put people off, and rapidly.

Google keeps a record of every search, from every user. If they notice that the bounce rate is abnormally high for a given search term for a first place position, you aint going to stay there long. I had someone argue "how do google know your bounce rate if you don't install analytics?"... Duh! I mean, what kind of question is that? So I explained. "Because the user will go back to Google and try the next link down for the same keyword" and if they do, that will be recorded and they will know the bounce rate of your site. It won't be as accurate as having analytics on your site. But so many companies have analytics on their site they can easily work out what is the right bounce rate for any given position even if you didn't have analytics on. Basically if a user comes back pretty much straight away after visiting your site and enters the same, or similar keyphrase in, they know your site isn't relevant and you will be booted.

It is why some sites have very little backlinks, very little keyword optomisation, but stay up there. Because Google knows the bounce rate is low and so that content is relevant and it couldn't care less how much you have paid to optomise your site one position below. Your bounce rate is higher than their, and so they will always be above you.

Makes sense hey. And that is all SEO is. Common sense.

So write good content that you know your users want, not what the search engines want. You will rise if you do SEO, but if that is all you doing, you will fall as well.
And the unfortunate companies stung by poor SEO companies see their positions rise early on, and then when they fall they go back to the SEO company and hand over good money after bad.

Infact there are many methods to improve your blog SEO and the main one is to use the right SEO plugins. I would recommend the All in one seo pack.

    cheers
