I am very new to dreamweaver and just got dreamweaver 4, I don't really get it or know much about it but then I was on the adobe site and saw dreamweaver cs3.

How old is dreamweaver 4? Should I even bother starting out with Dreamweaver 4? DO you think I should use it learn about dreamweaver or just buy Dreamweaver cs3 when I can afford it?

    Thanks

CS3 is much newer than DW4 and has more features. Good for learning if you're new to the web design world. Let's you see how elements are laid out, and once you're familiar (after a couple months) you should start coding by hand.

When you get to the pro level you need to ditch WYSIWYG's and start using a real text editor like VIM. You'll be faster on VIM than any normal text editor (Notepad, Notepad++, Crimson Editor, you name it.. unless it's something similar like emacs). I got sick of reaching for the home/end/pageup/pagedown keys and Windows shortcuts + editors in general (I hate using the mouse even more - So damn slow and restrictive).

If your ever planning on coding a website then I wouldn't even bother buying dreamweaver.

It's only good if your never wanting to learn to code.

If you learn how to use dreamweaver then you will pick up bad habbits and when you get round to learning to code it'll be much harder (generally).

i somewhat would have to disagree twistedpikes. CS3 is the latest and the best for dreamweaver. You can have Dreamweaver on split code so you can learn the code when inputing it into the site layout etc.

Sure. But if you ever get to the point where you know how you want your element rendered, a WYSIWYG just won't do anymore. You don't have complete control over things unlike 'code view' or using a non-WYSIWYG editor.

Dreamweaver is pretty good for the beginner to intermediate and that's how I started out 2 years ago, but when you learn the real benefits of seperating content from seperation you will stop using the design view/WYSIWYG mode and start using a real text editor.

I guess Dreamweaver 4 is a good for learning but you will end up needing a newer version

    Indianseller,
I found the old dreamweaver digging through old disks, after uploading I realized there has got to be something better. I have downloaded a trial version of cs3, I will be checking it out this weekend.

Thanks everyone, I am trying out cs3 this weekend, I am pretty good with frontpage and writing code is not an issue, I really just wanted to know what version the 4 was and if it was worth my time.

    Thanks again everyone.
