How often should I update my website?

I keep hearing that Google "loves" frequently updated sites. How frequent are we talking about? Should I update as soon as I see that Google has crawled the site (based on my webmaster tools info)? In other words, does it just want to see an update every time it crawls, or should I make little changes daily?

Update when it suits you and your site visitors, not the googlebot

I think it depends on your site -

If it is a blog, that has regular readers, then a regular update frequency is preferred. If it is an informative site - just update it when you have new(s).

    These are not good answers.

See google compares the updating of your site along with its ranking with the sites around it. For instance if your site is a "news" site it better be updated multiple times per day because every other site in that niche is updating regularly, if you have a oh IT Consulting company you should only update a few times per year, the reason is because the other 10 top IT Consulting results only update that often.

Everytime I add a new blog to my IT Consulting site I drop off the front page of google for about a week then I go backup.

I have about 10 sites, all different in layout and content. All I can say is, none of my sites aren't doing half as well as the site that I update twice a day. I used the same SEO techniques for all my site???

Im no expert but make of that as you will.

    Slim,

Are you updating the home page or the subpages? Do you think it matters? I mainly update a subpage of my site (the Classifieds section). Should I try to make little changes to the home page frequently as well?

Mostly the home page but that eventualy filters through to my sub pages.
Perhaps G likes the fact that the content it gathers from my front page can still be found on my site in two yrs time ? Its not so much changes but fresh content. Dont make changes for G's sake.

"Everytime I add a new blog to my IT Consulting site I drop off the front page of google for about a week then I go backup."...

I have noticed this at times when I update my sites. But, They usually come back as good or better. I've also noticed that sometines, if they start falling slowly, this will usually rejuvinate them. Not too many changes at once though...

Would I be considered nuts to say it depends on the "niche"...
My weather site is updated hourly, but, if I had a page on 9-11, (I dont), could you really update it every 2 weeks? (Excluding user input, RSS feeds, etc)...

Could the algos really support this technique?

Say that Googles algo knows all of its top 10 - 20 or whatever sites that rank for the phrase "Stockport Ohio Weather" are updated at least daily, and Joe Blow comes along with a optimized page for the same phrase, but, is only update weekly, could G see that as a keyword phrase that "fresh is good"? (And, all other things considered equal)

Now, what about the keyword phrae "September 11"... What if "most" pages ranking for that term "average" an update frequency of once a month...

    Make any sense?

    Definatly food for thought though.
