quick question guys: how often does the dmoz update with new listing inclusions? Say, if you were accepted, how long before it showed up in their database?

Usually within minutes but it can take a few days for it to appear on the public facing servers.

The downstream data users such as Google refresh their databases from ours whenever they feel like it - we aren't in control of that. Some do it monthly, some annually, some never.

By "public facing servers" do you mean the listings that we, the public, see?

Any page where the URL begins with http://dmoz.org/ is an Open Directory "Public Page". These are the ones available to the public.

It's funny, but when I had my old site, I never worried about any of this. Never did any SEO'ing, never checked my rankings, never asked people for links, and somehow I still got to the very top of almost all relevant search engines, if not AT the top. Now that I'm starting a new site, every day that goes by without me being in Google or Dmoz is killing me. Go figure.

I guess if you are waiting, once a week does seem like forever.
