How often does Google run a check on its publishers?

since there are hundreds of adsense bans daily (judging by the complains in all the forums), it seems that google does an often check on the websites that people use for adsense... does anyone have a rough idea how often they can potentially check the same site?

Not sure but they usually audit your site at the end of the month, just before they are supposed to issue your check (usually last week of the month)

yes it is true that Googlers(Google employees) check every site before a check is issued but some say they also check when the earnings cross $50

Normally , when a person's balance crosses $50 (i.e. when they send you a PIN) , they check your stats for any oddity.
It has happened to me. When I reached $50 , they sent me a warning . After reaching $90 , they banned me apparently for illegitimate clicks.
I received my PIN 3 days after I got banned. I mailed them & now got re-accepted into the program

When large earning surges happen, their accounts get flagged. I also think they look for high click sites with little traffic.

I find it hard to believe that they check the days before they issue your check, if this was the case, it would be so easy to just make some changes to the ads before that date. And then go back to the old way afterwards.

Do not click on your ads or publish the ads in a way that encourages unfair advantage regards to CTR, you should be fine.

I think what they do, is they check the earnings, make sure thos earnings are valid, and then hold those earning on the 15th, to send as payment when they send the cheque/EFT. So, you can't actually clock up a large sum just before they send out the check, as they validate all earnings before hand.
