i think, there is no need to update to already submitted sitemap files,
and i suggest to recreat the sitemap file of your site with new and updated structures.
coz google dont mind if you upload more than 1 sitemap file for the same directory.
google have capacity to eat 50000 urls in a 1 single XML or any type of sitemap file.

This is an interesting fact I've come to agree with. I keep my sitemap updated on a frequent basis (sometimes many times per day). This has caused my crawl rate to go up and probably has resulted in much more search engine saturation. This is an excellent point you've made.

This should be the standard for everyone who's reading this post. It's that simple, just keep your sitemap up to date, period. End of story. :).

Even if I'm making a lot of changes, I wait until the end of the day to update my sitemap.

generally update sitemap when you upgrade the site, but if upgradations are more frequent try to update sitemap file once a day only.

I update my sitemap when I have added a few pages. You don't need to go crazy. If there are backlinks, Google can also pick up pages that way.

How often is Google indexing your site? If it is daily then update the site map daily, But only if pages are added and removed. Surely a change in content is irrelevant?

I update the sitemap whenever I have significant content changes and I want the search engines to pick it up quickly.
