How often do you update site to receive constant traffic?

Hi. I understand search engines favor sites that are updated regularly.

So for those of you who receive regular traffic from the search engines, how often do you update your content to maintain the flow of traffic?

I've heard some people on DP say they run 50+ niche web sites. Are all those sites regularly updated or do they just sit there and generate income?

    Thanks!

Search engines don't 'favour' sites that are updated regularly. They are likely to spider the pages on that site more frequently though, but that in itself won't help you rank higher in the serps (if that's what you want).

I would say you dont have to update your site to get constant traffic.

But if you dont ever update it then you can lose some return visitors if they get bored.

Depends on the type of site though.

For instance link-vault doesnt update very much at all and they get constant traffic. I assume. :)

A site must be updated once in a week or two. Not daily.

I update the site / page to attain rankings and for maintaining positions if there is a fluctuation. So its not a regular update I would say.

Just think about your visitors and search engines as secondary. If I am a visitor to your site and you are not updating your content, then there is no reason for me to go back unless my default homepage is your site.

I'd rather have more visitors coming to my site because they are interested in my content, than rank high on search engines because the reason for ranking because I did a lot of linking and over optimization because once visitors come to my site, they'd disappear in a flash once they see I have lame content.

I update daily but search engine visits every 7-10 days.
So see how often Google crawls your site and you will have the answer,

I run mainly forums and they do have the pages updated a lot since we're talking about new threads. But for my normal sites I update the content from time to time, when i have ideas for an article. I think I would consider my visitors more: I need to give them constant updates, otherwise the won't come back

If your site gets crawled daily its ok to update daily but you always have the danger on loosing out on rankings by changing your content on which you have got rank. Moreover if google has not indexed you after your last change of site then it would be ranking you for hte content that is not there now on your page thus resulting in bad user experience when user actually visits your site. News sites are exceptions because they ought to update daily.

Exactly. Getting rankings is still only half the battle, when a lot of people think it's the full war. Once you get them to your site, via SE's, you gotta keep them there. And after that, give them a reason to continually come back for more (new articles, forums, blog, etc..).

Personally, I update my sites once a week with a good article. When you start to manage 30+ sites, adding new content (by yourself) every other day becomes a little difficult.

Google spiders my front page every 10-15 minutes - for use within Google News.

Just as well, as the website is updated at least hourly.

unless you have solid news like political news, sports news, eco news etc there seems to be no way to get into google news

    different in yahoo news
after a while - yahoo specs of course - a nRSS or RSS2 ends up in yahoo news

i think it depends in yahoo on the number subscribers you get in myyahoo

once IN Y news - after a ping it takes but a ferw minutes to be in yahoo news

with google - google has responded twice negatively in writing for a.m. reason

just have something that changes on your website like poll results of something dynamic if you aren't going to update very often

I try to add at least a page per day. Not for SE's, but for my visitors.
