I do it everyday. Backup the information on my PC to my Toshiba Magnia SG20 server... the information from the server to my PC... The catch is though, if my house burns down, so does my backup... Maybe I haven't thought this out too well..
Desktop machines hourly - full automated and incrementally. Website files daily and incrementally. Databases twice daily.
i've backed up weekly and daily (depending on importance of files) ever since my first harddrive failure
There's many tools that do it for you, like Iomega Rev drives and their software. Doesn't cost much, yet is worth a fortune. Try "Cron" and an offline backup server which rsynch's all files. Any good host will have this option for you.
Never, anymore. Used to make full backups every week back in the old days, back when I ran my BBS. I still have the whole drawer of 1 meg floppies (like 300+ at one point it used to take) that I used to use, over and over again. Nowadays I don't have a decent backup device, and HD space is always at a premium there's no room for it. I do have some archives of my sites though, that really need to be updated, LOL I figure if my machine crashes that bad, it's a good way to clean out all the crap. When it happens, I don't miss much of what gets lots anyways.
Thanks,T0PS3O My sites are hosted by Hostgator ..I've seen 'Cron Jobs' in the cp but didn't know what it is
I Backup to a cd once a week which I leave at a friends house. My host does claim to backup daily but I have never trusted that.
It's like Windows' Task Manager. You predefine what it does and when and you can go to bed knowing it does its thing. So you can tell it to do a MySQL dump every night and email you the dump attached, so you have a fresh back-up in your inbox every morning (not recommended for large DBs).
