    In my exprience,,
you should update it everyday, one day 2 ther other day 1,that's enough, and use webmasters tools to track the Google bot,if it comes everyday, your site will get a very good ranking..

update it only when there is new and relevant information available....updating your site simply because you think it is good for SEO is nonesense......

Once a day is enough. Not only for the search engines, but also for your regular visitors.

Depends on your competitors and how competition keyword is. If the keyword is not too much competitive and your competitor do not update their site on regular basis then you may not have to update them as frequently. But in some highly competitive market such as "php" "credit card" you may consider to update following your competitor schedule or more if you want to outrank them. You cannot outrank your competitor whom has both strong backlink and frequently content update if you don't do the same. It's good for maintain your site ranking either.

I agree that updating the site everyday is good, for both the sake of SEO and visitors.

By the way, what kind o webmaster tools can we use to track the Google bot to visit my site?

I would say you must update your site after every 15 days atleast (if you are busy and not have much time).

Otherwise updating site weekly will also work good for you.

There's no point in updating unless you're adding new and relevant information. Now, if you can add a new article or something once a day, that would be killer. Otherwise I really don't think it matters much.

It seems u don't like the niche well u need to update ur site on daily bases and if u can't then go for weekly or monthly. Its different for everyone depends how much he wants to earn and how much free time he/she have.

If u update ur site on weekly base then atleast added 10-20 pages. n after 365 days u will have 3650 pages.

I think what matters most is the number and quality of Back links. Try to concentrate more on BL

I have a gardening type of website with over 300 pages of content. I only update when the gardening industry has new information about a product. I also update during the seasonal changes (spring, summer, fall, winter) as garden folks want to know what and how to plant during the current season...Works for me.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone is trying to second guess how to fool the search engines into ranking their websites higher. The search engines spend a lot (and I mean a lot) of their resources into ensuring that any attempt to fool them don't succeed. What might work today, won't work forever.

Search engines whole aim and purpose is to make sure that the most relevant and useful sites rise to the top of their rankings. If you want to be there at the top, it's simple - build a site that offers useful and relevant information to your site's visitors. Of course if you have a news site, this may mean that your site needs updating many times a day and not just once or twice.

Concentrate your efforts on building a useful site, and other relevant sites will link to you. If they do that, search engines will increase your listing position and if the search engine algorythms are good, you'll stay there. Simple SEO :D
