Great little article, I really hate too many categories or too little, their should be an even balance. I also hate the fuzzy image verifications. I would rather weed out later than make people lose their eyesight LOL

    Thanks for the article!!

Hey, nice article, just one complaint :)

"And please remove your own directory from free directory lists if you decided to change your business model from free to paid."

I don't think this should be left entirely up to the directory owner. When I launched my first directory I submitted it to a couple of lists and before I knew it I was getting traffic from all kinds of lists that I had never even seen before.

Personally if I changed my business model I would inform those who I originally submitted to and expect the other lists to update accordingly just as they did when they copied the list the first time.

Anyway, thats my only gripe, liked the article on the whole :)

Well, I meant some of the major ones like info vilesilencer and directory critic. Those are the biggest traffic pushers (for my directory anyway), and they do update their listings pretty often.

But you are right, not all these directory of directories will update their listings just because you changed business model.

Nice rant, it makes for a useful checklist.

There is. It's called using a text or trivia-based captcha.

You mean like those 1+5 = ? kind of thing? Saw it a few times, I think that would work better than the image thing.
