interesting to find a small screenshot of dp's contest on http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/01/how-not-to-design-a-logo/
from the article where the DP screenshot is used: The worst deal you could probably go for is a logo design contest. Logo design contests are where you give a brief and then you have multiple designers come back to you with their designs. Although this sounds like a mighty good deal, the quality is usually far from anything you would want to represent your business. You will be wasting your money and in the long term, in terms of damage done to your business, that amount could be quite considerable. On another note, design contests & designers who design on a speculative basis are damaging the design industry as designers should not have to invest time and resources with no guarantee of payment. If you want further proof, read these articles: Logo Design Contests Are Bad For Business or The Reality of Logo Design Contests. What he says is true.
Assuming that is your website.... because i know people don't post links unless it's to their own benefit. The header graphic is done very well. Nice job.
No matter it is his site or not, but he shared a very nice article. I myself don't like the contests here on DP, not just about logo design but many other things. Thanks for sharing the nice article mate
ha, i was shocked to see this snapshot of the contest forum and confirmed seeing crazy_rob's username in the corner.
I've noticed people here expect a lot for the little amount they are giving. On the other side these designers expect a lot of money and return complete junk. It's rather sad.
I dunno, I think people that consider a 300$ logo 'a lot of money' are failing to see the value of it. Lets say you want a sign for your store. This sign should last 5 or 10 years. A vinyl sign and sign unit, regarless of the design on the vinyl, might cost 20,000$ If a designer charges 300$ for a sign designed, or your other alternative would be to let an untrained sign-shop worker just throw something together for 100$ what are you REALLY saving. This designed sign will bring in more than 200$ profit in 5 or 10 years, honestly. And logos - the paper they get printed on costs FAR more for a real business than the logo itself, so it would be a massive waste of money to have a bad logo. When you get into the real-world, design is the cheapest way to augment the percieved brand of your business. Think of wine bottles. Until you buy and taste the wine you don't know which is better. The onyl thing you have to make your decision on is the packaging, and what the package says about the product. There might be a 8$ bottle if wine sitting on the shelf next to an 80$ bottle of wine.....yet the 80$ bottle still sells because the deisgn ALONE convinces the customer that what they are about to purchase is worth 10 times more than the 8$ bottle. But the fun part is that the 80$ bottle didn't pay 10 times the design cost either so they're making tons and tons of profit.
Design contests are killing the design industry. you guys must have heard about NO-SPEC movement taking this issue into consideration.
what they really ought to call the article is "how not to add red cross-out marks to existing graphics". ms paint much?
