How not to compete with yourself in search rankings

I wonder about competing with your own site in rankings? I want to buy some blog posts for my site. But I am afraid they will come up higher in the searches and knock me out of my positions? I actually had this happen a few weeks ago: I made a craigslist ad and knocked myself into position # 2 because the craigslist posting came up ahead of my site! Is this a problem that happens frequently? Or am I being paranoid?

Even if they come up on top, they are still linking to you, which means indirectly they will be sending traffic to you and ranking. Also it looks like your onsite optimization isn’t good, so work on that as well.

Like a well keyworded blog post that I buy to link to me would come up ahead of my own website in search.

If a site writing a post about your site (which I assume isn't in your niche) outranks you for your own keyterms, you obviously aren't ranking well so it doesn't matter anyway. As you get more relevant backlinks the rankings will come, just have patience.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. If they are linking to you while they are at the top, you can expect traffic regardless of the position.

Obviously, some big blogs are way too strong for yours to compete with. As long as you can get a backlink from them, it would help. Also, know that their position is usually only for a while unless they are promoting theirs with the same keyword that you use.
