I can't tell you how many times I see the phrase "content is king....".
During all the time I've spent over the years on DP, I see that trend going away.
What I mean to say is that we're told Page Rank is dependent on backlinks.
If these are purchased (discreetly and in low numbers), then content has little to do with PR.
Stay with me for a minute here.....

Presumably a high PR (and good SEO) gets the better SERP's in our niche, right?
Now let's assume the content on that landing page isn't very good- but the text and banner ads are spot on.
You're getting targeted traffic to read something that throws them off, but find what they are looking for on your page regardless, and the money rolls in.

Is content really still "King" in today's marketing-driven world?

Well... pretty simple: I test different stuff and stick with what works

I've tried google ads, link selling, kontera, private link selling, direct banner ad deals, affiliates, selling own stuff, doing deals with the people who read the blog. I've tried many things, and I hated how the ads look... so from now it's mainly my own product + direct deals + some affiliates.

I've also got job offers via my blog (gaming companies) and networked with producers in some of the world's biggest gaming companies... so that itself is a reward.

I suggest doing what you really enjoy... and pondering what more you can offer to the people, and testing different monetization.

Right not I keep writing the blog because I enjoy the process...

Yeh... I tried not to update the blog for more than couple of times per month... and from this experiment I can say that traffic drops :D Now I'm back to updating daily.

    Smart work... smart work ;)

And the next level is unique content.

Hah, seriously people - just do what you really enjoy and success will follow. Works like a chipm! I'm just a regular guy... who started to think bigger.

    Next station: think 10 bigger...

PR and SERPS don't buy anything from you... it's people :)

If you have good content... you will improve your PR. When you write good stuff, people will link, SERPS will improve. I believe PR & SERPS are "symptom" while Excellent Content is the "root".

Naturally I know shit about SEO, and even though I got my site to PR6 (here's how it went to PR6), take my advice as a grain of salt.

That being said, Claymation, I have no doubt believing that your approach is right. But in the end I suppose it's about what you want: I just want to write some good stuff to people.

(Bit off-topic: my site was PR6, google slapped to PR4, now re-submitted and waiting to get it back).

    Cheers.

I have got bounce rate bouncing around 60-80% (now it's close about 68% or something I think), and I think the biggest factor in realizing this is that you really gotta have a newsletter/autoresponse/mailing list system. Newsletter won't help you with the bounce rate, but at least it will help get people to return on your site. I fully switched to Aweber and really like the system (other option is ymlp.com which is also good, although there was minor issues which caused me to swith the mailing list service provider - explained that in the blog post)

Other than that... I think bounce rate is somewhat connected to "how cluttered your site is". If there's loads of ads on your site... it might get people to go away. On the other hand, if people *know* that you have a good site, then ads doesn't necessarily harm.

My choice was to get a newsletter, although not sure if it suits to everybody.

thanks guys, glad you liked the piece of stuff I wrote

It's good idea to be "part of the target market" building the site for yourself... but it might also be a good idea to think if it's possible to generalize the content so that others might be able to benefit from it too.

One thing you might want to ask: "why?"

(Well, to be honest - I didn't answer that question... the answer came to me after I was getting the traffic along with job offers and whatnot. But anyway, it might be worth answering to that question before you start building a site).

Thanks for the article. I'm in a similar situation with just about 45 hits per day and I have been getting frustrated that I'm not getting anywhere. I'm going to give some of your ideas a try, and hopefully things will start to turn around. Thanks again!

I like how all these ideas are "real", and not some gimmick. So, thanks!

That said, I tried a lot of these, and while traffic has gone up as a result I'm nowhere near 15k readers.

I can relate to what you said about giving practical hints and tips. I always felt kinda silly giving advice because I thought that if I knew something, everyone else knew it, too. But that's not the case.

I've realized that I know things that 95% of struggling marketers don't know. That's why they are struggling.

I've also tried CPA's. That was a complete waste of time. That required WAY more effort than I wanted to put in.

Great post. People on the internet are looking for information so having plenty of relevant content is the right way to build a website. I have a site like that which is very highly ranked because it has lots of good content. With that in place you will get steadily traffic building up over time.

Social bookmarking can bring huge traffic but it doesn't convert too well. I did an experiment with StumbleUpon on one of my sites which was getting very little traffic and it absolutely exploded for a couple of days and then dropped back to normal.

Once you have got traffic it's a case of monetizing it which can be quite difficult to get right. I haven't tried text ads but as you seem to have found success with them I will look into it. Until one tries something one will never know if it will work.
