Before you rank on search engines, you have to find relevant keywords to target into your site. Then optimize your site on-page and then build links. Start reading basics of SEO, your question is very broad.
Use extensive less competitive and high traffic generated keywords, Do on page optimization like Meta tags, Alt.tags, Internal linking, Image name, Titles and headings etc...and then start Offpage optimization like Directories and article submission, Social bookmarking, Social Media and Classified, Blogs and Forums, yahoo answers etc...

You need to find a keyword and them do on page (titles, meta etc) and off page (link building, submission etc) optimization. If the keyword is competitive it will take a long time to show up. SEO takes a long time so dont expect to see wonders... increse traffic = content, submitting to social bookmarking site and quality directories. increse Page Rank = Many backlinks through blog commenting on dofollow blogs, some socialbookmaking sites that follow, directories etc.
First and foremost, you need to work on the onpage factors of your site. Choose keywords that have good search volume then put relevant contents to your site. Will you be targeting competitive kws or not? Your lnkbuilding efforts will depend on how competitive your target keywords are.
Agreed, if you're going to target a cometitive term, then you need to be more aggressive in your approach. Make sure the page your directing traffic to is optimized for your term, and promote the hell out of it in your linking strategy.
