How multiple articles can benefit your site?

Im wondering what is the true benefit of writing an article for your site and submitting it to directories?

I know the initial article and submissions will build backlinks, but is there really a benefit to write one article a week and submit it to the same directories?

Is this considered new content?

The benefit of writing article and submitting it is traffic and backlinks. Quantity of article help in getting more backlinks but quality help in getting more traffic.
