I think that most of the people here will agree that you need some amount of cash to start with a directory, it means if you invest more you get more back.

Absolutley not true, give a fool oodles of $ and he will blow the lot with no guarantee of return, give a shrewd operator a few bucks and he could turn it into gold.

Money alone does not guarantee success in this or any business.

The first question anyone starting up a directory should ask themselves, is who is gong to pay to submit their site to their directory and they must recognise that this horizon has changed dramatically over the last two months. It used to be pay your door money, scratch my back and I will scratch yours. But that has changed and directory owners are going to have to provide value in a market which is already saturated. What is the real value of a back link?

I read this quote last night.

“Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions - Why am I doing it, What the results might be and Will I be successful. Only when you think deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, go ahead.”

The above quote is funny!!! eheheehee. But a lesson to learn.

With enough advertising you can get submissions even you have the worst directory. If you're not getting the submission you expect for your directory, it's time to modify your advertising techniques.

    To answer the original question:

It depends on how much you're willing to make. Since everybody has different goals you will never get a fix amount.

I am making enough to say that directories can be a considerable source of income.
It's less than a day job salary but it's a very good return, considering the initial investment.

Another similar thread.. But I make several hundreds per month. I must admit that I rely on Google a lot for my business. The update delay is causing a big trouble for my plans. I predicted to earn $1,000 in August.
