You need to provide specifics. It's like asking "how much does a house cost?"
Do you want a shack or a beverly hills mansion?

I have no choice but to agree with the others, Scott. What kind of site do you want, who is the site going to be for (which user demographic), and what technologies do you anticipate being involved? Do you want the site to be easy to use and accessible (especially to search engine spiders and those with mobile devices as well as disabilities) and optimized for search engines, or do you just want it to look good (and not do much, if anything)?

Do you anticipate needing an ecommerce component, or a content management system? Or do you plan on doing everything by hand?

    I agree with everyone else.

However, if you're just after a HTML/CSS website, the price for a professional one would be at minimal $75ish, but all depends on what you need and the styles of design, etc. But $75 would be a safe price for nothing beyond basic.

Cheapest website I have ever seen done on a paid job is £2.50, most expensive I have ever worked on was £11,630,000 (and that was just a tweak to the code)

Depends on what you want doing, which country your designers/ developers are from etc etc

Well, if you just wanna know how much it costs (not to hire a developer) to host and maintain - between $0-$100 a month to start off. If you are gonna use massive server loads you need a massive server with lots of bandwith, but if you wanna do a blog or something, a free/chap host will be fine. You may pay more for other things such as Search Engine submissions, links//affiliate etc.

your question makes no sense, a website is not something you just buy.

if you want something cheap check out template monster or others like that, you still need hosting and a dns provider,

if you want a site built from the ground up branded with your company then they start around $100-300 per page (personally, i think paying per page is a rip off, somewhat)

you should look to spend anywhere from $200-800(for a static html site) and $1200+ for a dynamic CMS powered site

Kharen, most freelancers have a set hourly rate of $XX.xx which they then multiply by the number of hours they believe it will take them to complete a job to arrive at a quote.

So let's say John Q. Freelancer charges $60.00 an hour for his work (making each minute "on the clock" worth a dollar of his time). If he thinks it's going to take him eight hours (a typical work day in the 9-5 world) to get the job done, he'll quote for $480 (though he'd probably also round it up to $500 since it's close enough and might cover any transaction fees he may incur, especially if payments are made via PayPal). Now, if that same job ends up taking 12 hours instead of 8, he'll just eat the cost (at least that's how I work).

webkid, that price you quoted (2-3 pages within 5 hours at $50-100) tells me that you really don't value your time. No Web designer can make it at $10/hour these days, especially if they take on clients directly (taxes alone will cut your income down to about $7-8/hour, which is barely minimum wage in many parts of the US) and then you'd have to bill 40 hours a week each and every week.

I've worked full time for minimum wage before. Trust me, you can't live off of that. Especially when you have to pay rent for an apartment, or worse, a mortgage on a home. And that's just living by yourself with no dependents or car insurance to pay (which also means no car, or no gas to put into the car). Try increasing your hourly rate to $60/hour at the bare minimum, that way each minute of your time that you bill is not only worth a dollar, but you'll also be able to have more money left over for your expenses after taxes. It'll also help compensate for the time you can't bill for each week.

I recommend you work backwards. Ask yourself these questions:

    - IDENTIFY what it is you would like your website to do.
    - Is it a shopping website?
    - Is it an online brochure to promote a product or service?
    - Do you want to add content regularly? If you do, it will cost you more if you want a content management system (CMS) or you can set up a blog using FREE apps like BLOGGER, WORDPRESS or TYPEPAD etc. There are more.
    - Do you want your site to be highly dynamic meaning animations etc, then you will need flash or the like. This will be more expensive than a static site.
    - Does your website require a database?
    - there are a lot of relatively cheap website templates you can use too. Search for them and you are most of the way there.

    For SEO (search engine optimization)
    - Keep in mind that if you want a high organic listing on the search engines (like Google, Yahoo etc) then don't use too much FLASH.
    - regularly add content. The spiders love that and your readers will love that too.

These are a couple questions to ask yourself becauseif you answered YES to most of these then your site will cost more than a basic HTML based site. Then again, if you develop your own blog, it will only cost you in time to learn how to set up a blog, upload your content and to work with the FREE templates that you can find online (eg blogger, wordpress, typepad etc).

    Good luck! :):):):)
