How much would a good dating site cost me?

    not purchasing an existing site.

But paying someone to make it?

That is totally upto who's designing it for you. But generally you can get good enough things in a $500.00. Considering the Hosting + Designing and then buying scripts, that would sum up to that amount.

    I already have hosting.

Cost me $20 to register a domain.

Well, if you want a custom made, powerful dating site, with a couple of nice features, a site that can handle a lot of online visitors, then it won't cost less than 2.000$.

Yes, you can get it up for ~500$, maybe even less, but then again, the quality will corespond to these 500$.

It will depend if you are using off the shelf script or a custom written one.

Off the shelf can probably be done at $500, if it is custom then effectively the sky's the limit for the cost and it will depend on what functions you are requiring to have included - $2000 isnt a bad ball park for a basic one by a freelancer, easily looking at $4000+ for something more advanced or by a development company.

You really shouldnt get hosting before having a programmer on board as otherwise you have to select a programmer that works with the technologies you have decided your host should have rather than deciding on the best programmer and then getting hosting suitable for the technologies they use.

I wanna know where you're still paying $20 for a domain at because that's outrageous.

You can get a domain from godaddy for $7.15 with the $3 coupon from retailmenot.com.

All you need to do then is go to a hosting provider and you're set. Don't pay $20 for a domain name, that is a ripoff. If you got any questions regarding anything send me a pm.
