I have an idea for a site and the closest thing I can compare it to is a directory. So I was wondering if I could get some input from directory owners on how much work is involved with owning a directory. How much time is spent a week and stuff like that. Thanks
If you are doing it for the money..you will find it too much time consuming with no decent revenue in the close future. If you are doing it as a hobby, you won't feel how the time passes by, and probably you will succeed. As a directory owner..you have to analyse, compare, re-analyse, promote, promote, promote & promote it like hell. In this niche, nowdays you will make money only if you come with something unique and attractive for the visitors(webmasters and non-webmasters as well). The aim of a web directory, is to determine the webmaster visitors to want to get listed on your directory, and also to provide a variety of web resources and helpful information across many categories for the non-webmaster visitors. You can only achieve this by bringing something unique, and this requires you to be creative and to invest time and probably money in a web directory before you can make some $$$ from it. Best of luck with you directory ! Thanks, hyper
2 hours per day. 1 hour for approving and rejecting links, another hour for getting backlinks for my directory.
Nothing is fixed. depends on how much you like your directory and how much you want to make it a big... ranges from 5 minutes/day to 10 hours/day
I spend close to 2 hours per day in approval / rejections for one directory and I don't really know how much time me and operator spend for promotions.
Well theres two ways. The quick, no effort, not much time spent way. or The taking time, caring about it way. Basically you can accept all listings and do mass approvals, or in the other direction you can be really picky about every part of your directory.
