I think white is a good content background color but you can drint to some light shadings for background if you know how to incorporate it all correctly.
when in doubt, split test. How it looks is really secondary to how it performs. "I prefer this colour" is irrelevant in a business, which way makes more $$$ is the only thing that matters. See if you can do split test on the looks and see which one wins.
