I depents totally on the type of website / the amount of content / the quality of that content and a few more things. I am doing the same currently and after 3 months i am making +700 visitors a day out of Search Engines. Could be way more if i should have spend more time on it.

I strongly believe that completion of this goal depends on the activity you put forward to achieve it. I mean, you can't just expect traffic to flow in to your site when you have not done the right thing to rank it on search engines or effectively promote it through social media sites.

On the flip side, it's not clear to me though if your referring to 5k page views or 5k unique visitors. Either way, you still have to work hard on promoting your site through SEO or SEM, whichever is effective for your niche.

It really depends on your strategy, and how good your on-site and off-site SEO is, and ofcourse the number of traffic that niche gets that you can get for yourself

Like a lot of people have already said... it'll depend on what your site is about and the keywords you target. If you build a site about something no one searches for, then you won't get any SE traffic.

    The sandbox was also mentioned.
If you can, start with an aged domain, preferably one that is at least a year old and has a bit of content on it (even just one page).

I've found when using an aged domain, search engines start sending it traffic pretty quick. First 3 months of a site I started on an aged domain.
