We have one home page review that brings us over 1000 visitors a month - but that is an exception
Normally directory reviews are noted for serps and indexing not traffic

It depends how you look at it, I submitted a web site to 50 directories as an experiment early last year. I dont get any traffic from the directories but my site is listed number one in Google for it's primary term and gets good quality traffic daily. No other promo work done or needed ;)

I submitted my bidding directory to many paid directories last year.

Even now I get 10-30 hits a day purely from paid directories, a further 15-50 a day from all the bidding directories.

The one off fee for a general directory or a large fee to bid high on a bidding directory is worth it in the long run. For example, one bid directory where I have a $300 listing sends me 60 hits a month. After 1 year, that works out at 720 hits. For only $300, we are looking at cheaper traffic than if I used PPC.

Directories are great for both traffic and SERPs. Niche directories will send you much more traffic, like directory critic does with me.

I agree with directory lists. They are wonderful for traffic and more wonderful if you sponsor them, :D

    Hi

Directory submission is used for building back links not for traffic. To get unique visitors for your website, submit your website to directories related to your theme.

until now, no traffic at all, I dont know why...anyone know any specific directories that would send traffic at the future? You have to pay on those directories?

I have to agree with both of you!

I own a successful article directory that send thousands of targeted visitors to my author's pages every single day.

How to get traffic via article directories is something that has to be studied and understood. If you are simply submitting any old hastily written article with a generic resource box, then W3bmaster is absolutely correct.

However, if you know how to write your article and resource information, you'll get tons of highly targeted traffic and Mikey is correct.

Trust me, I study my stats in great detail and I see both happening every single day.

I get a lot of traffic directly from links in directories - for example there is one directory by itself that sends me around 30 clicks per week and no it is not a bidding directory.

The one thing all the directories that do send me traffic have in common is they are quality directories that I had to pay a review when submitting.

Of course that is not counting all the indirect traffic I receive from any effect those links have organic traffic.

If you are submitting to free directories and expecting to get direct traffic from them, well there is your problem. Posters to this thread should probably clarify if those directories they are not getting traffic from are free or if there were review fees.

directories are not used for getting traffic it is a technique of link building.

    NO NO NO.

Perhaps most people use directories for link building only, but I have to say that when done correctly, you can easily build a huge traffic generating avenue for extremely targeted traffic that's looking and ready to buy whatever you have to offer.

I personally don't get traffic at all and I personally don't surf directories at all. I would be really interested on could a directories could generate traffic for a websites. I'm talking about those PHPLD websites which got less then PR4
