We're top of the category.. listed three times. Traffic is negligible. The biggest referrel out of these three listings has yielded 102 hits over a period of close to a year.

Are DMOZ clones linking to you and improving your PageRank ?

I get an insignifigant amount of traffic from the Google directory nor the clones. I have three listings for one of my sites and it was accepted about a year ago.

Google sees the links so its not a total loss

That's a good point, but bare in mind, how often do *you* use directories to find stuff?

I know when I want to find stuff I go too one place first, then two others if that fails. I can't remember the last time I used a directory. I believe myself to be a fairly typical surfer - as I'm sure you are? Do you use them? :)

I don't dig down in my logs deep enough to find traffic from the google directory. It's that insignificant.

That's a good point. I never use directories. They are, imho, a waste of time if you're really searching for something.

It'd be interesting to see what percentage of Directory users only ever used them to submit sites, as opposed to actually surfing with them. I know the only time at a directory is because I'm trying to submit there. :D

but i've noticed in many key word searches, directories coming up. in my case "dog forums" Dmoz ranks pretty high.

One of our sites has a 375 requests to 83 requests. Google directory being 375, and DMOZ 83. These are number 203 and 455 in terms of "Rank", in our stats/reporting.

Google Searches rank as follows repspectively.

I got a site that comes number 1 in google for the keyword "arsenips", but that doesn't necessarily mean people click on it or even that it generates me much traffic (any in fact).

In the same vein as the directories, the fact it appears in the top listings doesn't mean it'll necessarily drive lots of traffic. In fact its fair to say you should expect directories to rank high because of their adherence to SEO principles and rules.

However, a user clicking on a link to a directory, after searching for the term Dog Forums will be presented with a raft of links and not a Dog Forum.

In my experience, I hit the back button and look for a link that takes me directly to a Dog Forum and not a listing page. I reckon that's why high rankings don't necessarily apply to high traffic in the case of directories, IMO. ;)
