    directories don't send/give more traffic.they give only inbound links.if you want to generate more traffic please use other techniques/methods.

    directory submission doesn't increase traffic to ur site. these are just good as back links to increase PR. but nonetheless, directory submissions is a good way to diversify your linking strategy. so do a few anyways.

    I think, through the directory submission, You cannot get traffic easily.Directories back links help to the website for gain the back links.And if you get back links in bulk then your site gets higher rank in SERPs.And then you can get traffic in bulk.Because 90% traffic come from the search engines.

    You will get some traffic from good niche directories. Witness YMC's craft directory.
    You will get a little traffic from good, well supervised general directories from people checking out the opposition and the curious.
    You will get NO traffic from spam infested, approve everything directories.
    You will eventually get traffic from search engines if the directories you have selected adhere to their guidelines and your submission descriptions are as high quality as the website you hope to have approved.

    Well I dont think directory submission is old school. You can get fair amount of PR and traffic from directories. Dont ignore it!!
