How much to pay an admin?

I am using a VPS for my sites since they got too big for shared hosting. Since I have no idea of how to manage a server, I am using the services of a nice guy from Russia. He has been very helpful and takes care of any problem the server might have. He also keeps all the programs up to date.

How much does an admin usually charge? I am giving him $50 a month and don't know if it is too much or too little.

    $ 25 - $50 per month is nominal

Some admins are charging $100 +

Hard to say... If you would want my hours, Id charge 25 euros per hour, but if you want a service contract then there are lots easier prices.

$50-100/server is a good price if you are getting the work you require. Glad to see I am not the only one that thinks server admins are an important part of the budget.

They sure are! The first thing I told this guy was that I was too busy working on my sites and last thing I needed was spending my time tweaking and fixing server issues.

Now I work on my sites and he takes care of the server, best $50 bucks I have ever spent in my life

$50 sounds like a good deal to me. Especially if he handles all of your problems

$50 is a good deal, ideally I would give him a bit more to keep him sweet.

Yeah... I've had all kind of problems with the server and I if send this guy an email he will get it fixed in a few minutes.
And all for 50 bucks... Just having my sites down for half an hour would cost me much more than that!

I used to get Indian guys to do those jobs for me... but I must say that the Russians are way better, I've had some very complicated tasks done by them

Please would someone be good enough to explain this in more detail. I have the option of selling people onto a host but am afraid to do so because I would not know what to do if anything goes wrong. Fryman, why does this Russain guy have a better connection with your host that you do?

Sorry for the stupid questions but DP has opened my eyes to a lot of opportunities and I am sure I am not the only one here that would like to know more about this issue.

Well, I don't really understand your question... but I used to have my sites in shared hosting. You know, the one where you pay the guys to open an account and they send you the cpanel information so you can log in.

Then I got my own private server, where I need to open my own accounts and set up all my sites. It is quite complicated so I decided to hire a guy to do this for me. He also keeps an eye on the server to check that it is working well.

Okay Fryman, that is clearer. My own sites and client sites are hosted all over the place. You are saying if I bought my own server I could bring them all together and get some remote guy to take care of the details? Where would you suggest I go to learn more about this?

How many sites do you have? How much do you spend on hosting? Getting a private VPS server will cost you 50-80 bucks a month, plus the fee you would pay your admin to take care of it.

I decided to get my server when I had about 8 different shared hosting companies, it was a real mess, so I just put all of my sites in my server and it is much easier for me to deal with them.

So, if you think that a private server would be ok for you and it is within your budget, go for it. You can learn more about server issues at www.webhostingtalk.com , but beware, there is just TONS of information and you might get lost :D

I sure did, that's why I hired an admin to take care of it
