How much to charge for ads and how to do it

I have finally built a site up to have a respectable following. My analytics account says that I am getting around 16,000 absolutely unique visitors and around 38,000 pageviews per month and the volume of both is increasing on average by about 5% per week. We are approaching what I expect to be a very high traffic time for the site and I am ready to finally move away from adsense ads and into paid advertising. I have two questions on this topic:

    1) How much would you charge for an ad block to be visible on every page of the site for a one month time period? How would that change if the ad was rotated with ads from a second company, etc?

    2) What is the best way to approach a retailer to get them to consider buying ads on your site when they don't know anything about you? What analytical information is best to show them other than the information I mentioned above?

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Maestroc, are you sure you are ready to approach advertisers?

I don't mean to be a kill joy here, but one quarter to one half of a percent of visitors click on ads. Well, anything related to sex is more, obviously.

Let's say you get 1,000 vistors a day. At a half a percent that's 5 people clicking on ads. Do you think that is enough for an advertiser?

"1) How much would you charge for an ad block to be visible on every page of the site for a one month time period? How would that change if the ad was rotated with ads from a second company, etc?"

I would do the math, like above, and then charge him appropriately, and according to what he is selling.

If I get 10,000 visitors a day, around, roughly, 50 will click on the ads. 50 times 30 days is 1,500.

Now, let's say he is selling products that appeals to single men, like lifts, or pheromone cologne. I know that sells, so I would do the rest of the math, how much he is selling it for, and I will try to work it where he gets half and I get half.

"2) What is the best way to approach a retailer to get them to consider buying ads on your site when they don't know anything about you? What analytical information is best to show them other than the information I mentioned above?"

The don't need to know anything about you other than your stats, and your URL. That's all they want to know.

If I was to ask for advertising space in your site, that's all I would want to know.

Good luck, and see ya in the funny papers.
