How much time do you spend building links? or "am i crazy?"

2009 is "the year". At least, that is what I keep saying.

I spent a large portion of last year lurking on this forum, and doing black box tests of various traffic generating techniques, basically just prodding at the internet.

This year, I'm running full speed with what I learned.

I am now spending 2 hours a night, or so, building links. I also have booked college kids *who i am paying 4 bucks an hour* to come in every weekend (44 hours of work a month).

How does this compare to the 'top earners' here? should i try to fit in another hour a day, at the risk of my own sanity?

This is for a *currently* pr0 site, my ultimate goal (and yes i know how improbable it is to achieve) is to rank for "credit cards"

On top of my manual link building, should i pay for a link building service, or continue putting that cash into high quality onsite articles/videos/podcasts like I currently am doing?

It depends on how much time can you allocate on your site building those back links. Don't push yourself too far because building back links doesn't mean that you should forget about the other important things on your life.

I'm just building back links that I know that I could do on a daily basis.

Heck, if you found people to build links for $4 then spend your time building up the site. let your employees build the links.

Building links is not that much of work. It is not about quantity, it is about quality. Having thousands of low quality links will not help much. Having 2-3 good quality, high-PR, relevant links with keyword-rich anchor text should be enough to start you off. So basically focus on quality links, not quantity of links.

Make sure you teach your college students to get quality links. IE - Dofollow, Relevant, with strong anchor text. Not should how you instruct them but for $5 bucks a month I'd buy this and tell them to follow it step by step!

You should focus on other areas like content generation. If 2009 is the year! You can't just create backlinks. You need a quality site and products to monetize the traffic from the backlinks.

    Good luck!

I'm sure you're aware that ranking well for "credit cards" and most finance related phrases is no easy task. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of companies who want those keywords and some of them probably throw millions of dollars into achieving a good rank. It's not impossible to get there but you're at a severe disadvantage because these companies have held well established rankings for years. I would target a more specific niche to start and build a network of sites up in the around this topic to get a large proportion of long tail keywords.

yea man to get a rank in credit cards are certainly hard task, not impossible but it's very hard task... Are you sure you are up to it? Just 2 hour for building link? I spend 6 hour a day to build and reinovate my site just to get a moderate keyword difficulties...

I have been trying to get into dmoz, but they never even respond.

Yeah, I plan on getting into yahoo directory at some point. But right now, I'm looking at it from the perspective that the same thing could buy me several high quality articles for onsite, and through some basic social bookmarking, can be several high quality backlinks.

It depends on what kind of project I'm working on. Some sites attract more natural links than others and require less work.
For strictly commercial projects which nobody is going to link EVER - there is a lot more work to do.
Too bad the day is 24 hours only :D

Did I read that right, did you say "Credit Cards"

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh, that's gonna be extremely tough, you are competing against some very deep pockets!

I suggest a more targeted Longtail key phrase such as apply for a credit card or credit cards for bad credit or low interest credit cards or best credit card deals

Of course I haven't seen your website so I don't know what's best suited, but I'm sure you get the idea.

You will have a much greater chance of getting ranked high in the serps for a longtail keyphrase (and they are much more targeted)

You might want to consider using a link building service such as LinkVana, I have been using them for several months now and the results have been spectacular,

If you'd like to learn more about LinkVana, you can PM me or check out my signature

    Googd luck

The constant debate about "quality" links vs. quantity. I can measure quantity, but quality is impossible to measure. There are web pages that Google has given a TB PR of 7 that pass no link juice and other PR 0 pages that can rock your ranking in Google. I vote quantity.

i agree I have had many top ranking sites in google, but you need keywirds 100000 people search for, not the 100000000 that everyone is after

Credit Card is an extremely competitive niche. As VStar has mentioned you better target for long tail key words. If you really want to target this niche, you better use link building service. I doubt you can rank well all by your own and your team unless your team know where to find those high PR websites that you can inject backlinks with related anchor texts. Otherwise, it may take you a long long time to get to page 1 in Credit Card niche. You know for this particular niche, you are dealing with those really know what they are doing and they have already established a strong foundation. So beating them is not an easy task. Good luck
