It depends. If your design means the graphics design and images, I think they contribute no part in search engine ranking. But if you put your important text content as a text in images, or your images take long time load. I think that may be the problem. You can study the "Webmaster Guidelines" by Google and validate your HTML/XHTML code using "W3 Validator". They are useful too.
It's very important if you use HTML to design a website. You must keep your eye on <h1> <h2> <h3> ... It's just a header tag. But it make you high score on SEO. If you want to create a text with large size. You should choose header tab , no css choose. This apply for title , title of table or header link. Goodluck
You might want to add as many keywords you can in the page title. I've found that google gives a lot of credit to the page title providing it is relevant to the body content.

Spamming keywords to try to gain relevancy might result in totall blaklisting from all searches. Don't risk becoming unlisted. You can't cheat the system, if you want the #1 slot on google, be the #1 website out there - hey if Google didn't put you there it wouldn't be much use, and if it wasn't much use then people wouldn't use it! Don't buy into this SEO voodoo, you just need to make a site properly and efficiently, and the search engine algorithms are designed to compensate - that's what they do.
SEO can easily drive traffic to your website but it depends on yr website design how much conversion you get.
Althought site design in terms of graphics and layout has no impact on SEO...it does impact appeal to actual visitors. Beyond that, you want to put as much text as possible. Without the use of images, this will register more keywords.
