If you have to ask all of this, you probably shouldn't be starting a search engine.

First of all you need good investment of money and skillful programmers. My suggestion do something unique and different because there are lot of big search engines out there :|

    Two.

As long as those two have the intelligence, imagination, education and entrepreneurial flair of Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

it looks like nobdy wants to reply to ur post seriously. Mr. Dhaval can u plz tell me how much awareness u have about search engines? at start u just need a designer and a programmer u can get work done by both of them and then u need to promote ur website. thats it.

That's not true. Just because he asks doesn't mean he can't make it. it's not always about what you know it's who you know.

    that's exactly what i was thinking :)

but just for the sake of discussion, even if you had all the right people, and by some sort of miracle had a better algo than google itself, CAN YOU AFFORD THE 500 000 SERVERS THAT GOOGLE HAS in order to be able to craw and store the caches of BILLIONS of pages ? can you even afford the cost of 5000 Servers ?, or 500 ?

you really don't get it :D, in 1999 the number of internet pages was not a fraction of the web today, and assuming you skip all the billions of pages that you need to index, and only crawl and index new pages, you would need to index 10 million pages per day? did you know that every day 10 million pages of unique content go live ? do you know how many servers and hard drive space you need to achieve that ?

anyways, to sum it up for you, you can't start a real working searching engine unless you have 1 billion dollars to invest in the 500 000 servers that you will need + all the genius minds and scientists that you can find to craft the algo. and after you do all of this, it will still "SUCK" when compared to google. :D

Ok, dont want to be unkind but its not really the best time to start a new search engine - its been done and in case you didnt notice big G REALLY dominates the market. If you are determined, then start small and plan to grow quickly. You need a good idea, a unique approach and offer something that hasnt been done before - like ask did a few years ago when they made their search engine 'answer' english-like questions. In theory you could start like Page and Brin did all those years ago but remember they had no competition at all and they had some killer algorithms - you will need s good idea as well. Dont be put off - you dont need 5000 servers to start with - these guys didnt have that either - it is actually possible to buy them as you grow you know!

    keep trying

I can't agree more. This looks like a spam post to me. Otherwise, you can use Search Engines such as Google or Bing to find out your answers. If you want to build a search engine, you need to know what it is and how to use it first. Btw, I think one is the minimum number if you can code, otherwise 2.

For having a really meaningful SE, you seriously need lot many resources as the net has grown very rapidly and you got to have bigger and better reach to cover most of it!

There is no point in trying to know the least manpower required since if you are very determined... start with whatever you can afford! :)
