I just added up what my spam filters were blocking and for the last 4 months Ive blocked nearly 5000 spam attempts at dollarsblog.com That averages out to 40 a day. Thats not even including all the spam that I DO let through (cause im generous )
Hi Domainer 10 We do not use wordpress but we were getting SPAM so I thought we should share our findings. Hello I am using ExpressEngine the SPAM filter option they supplied with our purchase keeps the Blog 100% free. I lied I get about 1 per month and we add it to the IP Blocker function seems to be keeping us clean. Logic...
You can stop this easily. Just hide the comment form in javascript. (Javascript Obsfucation). Then when the bot downloads the page and parses to fill it with spam the form will be invisible. Stop blog spam
Interesting. So bots can't read javascript? The thing is though, the spam filter i uses stops most bot spam before it even gets to askimet or the comment queue. Most of the spam that actually gets through, which is a small percentage i have to go through manually to approve, is written by real people.
My Akismet block about 1600 now, all crazy spammy comments. For those advertising to promote web sites through blog comments, I guess you better do not subscribe, it will be extremely bad for reputation if others see your spams in the comments.
Yes the bot cannot not even see the comment form only breathing humans with a browser with javascript enabled. Now they could programe the parser for the bot to unescape the javascript and then read it. But then you could just use a more harder encryption. This really stops comment spam dead in tracks. As for the spam done by real humans, there is nothing you can about that except delete it.
What kind of spam are you getting, as far as what they write. I am getting a lot of copy and pasting part of my article with a link to their website below it. Like: I totally agree "INSERT ARTICLE SNIPPET HERE" www.spamsite.com
Yeap exactly, cut and paste of my article followed by their url. Such url promotion I would consider as Black Hat SEO.
When you guys are giving numbers are you giving total (attempts plus ones that pass through filters)? Because if your spam filters are letting 40-200 a day through, you need to beef it up your filtering some more.
You mean no robotic spammer has gotten through. Most "real" commenters on blogs are disguised spammers.
