Lot of my webmaster friends are using profile page of Social networking site i.e. facebook, myspace, orkut etc to make links for their respective websites. Sometimes they are also making fake profile in those social networking sites. How much those links worths in terms are SEO value? Are they Dofollow/Nofollow? Feel free to share your ideas .

social bookmarking is no longer that effective unless you can make it in the front page.

You should use social bookmarking in your linkbuilding. Whether they are no-follow, do-follow, high authority, low authority . . . Just do a few everytime you add new content . . . Google would expect it, it looks natural.

NB: You're not going to rank just on the back of bookmarks though so makesure you're building other links as well :)

no matter how high the PR is of the main site, profile page backlinks dont help much. you also need to make sure that the profile page itself is dofollow or not. DP for example is a reputable site but the profile page on DP is nofollow so wont pass any link juice for google. lot of service providers were selling such service here on DP and still selling on other forums but since it is considered as a span method of link building, DP doesn't even allow that type of services here anymore. that should say something about it

You're not going to get value out of a profile page if you're not an active member of the social network. No activiety = no one will visit your profile = no one will visit your website from this network. In terms of SEO value, you're going to get nothing from Facebook or MySpace since they are no-follow. Some sites you'll get a small SEO benefit, but social networking should be thought of for its intended value...networking. They are a great way to drive relevant traffic to your website regardless of the SEO value, or lack there of. Best practices would be to use these pages for networking, and avoid spamming dozens of social networks for the sake of a few links.
